II. HISTORY AND CULTURAL LIFE OF THE TOWN OF PAETE
Part One: History
19. Present official name: Paete
20. Former name: San Lorenzo; derived from the name of the patron saint of the town.
21. Date of establishment: 1580, as a barrio or 'visita' of the town of Lumban until the year 1600, when it was separated from Lumban and was annexed to the town of Pañgil. Records further show that this pueblo consisted of villages called San Antonio, Abacao, and Babaye. Then, in the year 1602, this pueblo now known as Paete separated from Pañgil and became an independent parish.
22. It was said that a couple from Lumban whose names were not definitely known and their kin made their new homes on the shores of this town. They were said to be fishermen.
