DIVISION OF RIZAL
DISTRICT OF CALOOCAN I
Caloocan Elementary School

Report on the historical data of Caloocan. Location - Caloocan is situated two miles from the Bay of Manila and ten miles northwest of Pasig on the main road. Geographically, it is 14°39' North latitude, 120°58' East longitude.

POPULATION - The population of this town has constantly increased as shown by the statistics of the periodical census undertaken. In 1902 - the population was 9,291. In 1942-43, 830; and the recent census showed a population of 65,698.

HISTORY - The town's name originated from the Tagalog word lo-ok, meaning interior, bahia in Spanish. Caloocan in 1814 was part of the Tondo District, but after a year, it was organized as a town, with San Roque as the patron saint.

Caloocan is the most thickly-populated town of Rizal Province. Most of the residents are railroad laborers and fishermen. Balintawak, a part of Caloocan, is famous for being the place where, in 1896, the Katipunan Organization headed by Andres Bonifacio rose to arms against Spain and started the successful revolution. Other important spots are Pasongtamo, where Tandang Sora fed and supplied the Katipuneros with food; and Grace Park the airport near Manila. Balintawak was already annexed to Quezon City and so with Pasongtamo. Grace Park is no longer an airport but a commercial and business center of Caloocan.

LEGEND OF CALOOCAN - The better known source of Caloocan is the barrio of Aromahan which was called by the Spaniards Espinas or barrio España. This barrio was situated in the lower part of the municipal building. This barrio was than a part of Tondo. During the administration of Governor Tabora, there was a ruling that a new path to the main town could be opened and that the people could cultivate the vacant lots. The people then started to go northward and westward of the place. They built huts and they began their usual daily chores. That was the start of Caloocan.

The people began to crowd in the lower part of Caloocan. Caloocan was then annexed to the Province of Morong – now Rizal Province. The archbishop told the people to have Saint Roque as the patron saint.

The first barrios of Caloocan were Pajo — so called because of the abundance of small mangoes; Sampalukan — because of the presence of tamarind trees; Gitna - middle — the poblacion or main town; and Dulo — the end. The increase in the population led to the construction of big and better roads.

The former area of Caloocan was 12,000 hectares, with the following barrios — Poblacion, Baesa, Bagbag, Bagbaguin, Bagong Barrio, Bagubantay, Bagumbong, Bahay-Toro, Balintawak, Novaliches, Pasong Tamo, Pinagpatayang Buwaya, Sampalukan, San Bartolome, Santol, Sareyo, and Talipapa.
The present area of Caloocan is reduced to to the annexation of some of its barrios to Quezon City. The barrios annexed were Balintawak, Novaliches, Baesa, Bagbag, Bagbaguin, Bagong Bario, Bagubantay, Pasong Tamo,

San Bartolome, Santol, Sareyo, and Talipapa.

The present area of Caloocan is reduced. It is divided into districts with the Vice-Mayor in charge of the poblacion and the eight remaining districts are under the charge of the eight councilors. The districts and the man in charge are the following:

PART II - CULTURE

Most of the inhabitants of the poblacion are acquainted with one another. Most of them, especiall the women, devote their time to home industries. The men, on the other hand, are mostly farmers and fishermen.

A. Courtship

A man has to serve the parents of the girl he loves for about 2 or 3 years before he could talk to her. The parents chose the bride for their son and the groom for their daughter, as the case may be. At the time of the marriage, the parents of both parties give a dowry, which serves as the starting point of the couple's life.

B. Common Games:

The common games are piko araw at gabi, sungka, and kapitan bakod.

C. Common Illnesses - Cholera and appendicitis

D. Objects of Fright:

The objects of fright were - old man of the hill, the tiyanak, aswang, mangkukulam, kapre, and those people who possess magic powers.

[p. 10]

E. Measurement of Time -

Time is measured by means of the shadow in the morning or at noon. In the evening, the crowing of the rooster indicated time.

Most of the people were also superstitious. Some of the superstitions were:

1. A maiden about to be married should not try on her wedding gown lest an accident befall her groom.

2. Sweeping at night is a bad practice. It will cause the appearance of centipedes.

3. Sitting on a pillow causes boils

4. A person who cannot eat well because of a fishbone stuck in his throat should consult a person called suhi.

F. Some of the Folk Dances:

1. Tinikling
2. Lawiswis-Kawayan
3. Paru-parong Bukid

G. The people were very religious. Their piety saved them from many disasters and perils.
