VIII. HEALTH BELIEFS AND PRACTICES:

a. What superstitions do the people still believe in? How can such false beliefs be dispelled?

Superstitions:

1. "When you are walking and a black cat happens to pass by, it means bad luck or there will be an accident."

2. "If a family consisting of 13 members is eating at the same time on a table, one of them will die."

3. "If somebody is going to marry and she tries to put on the wedding dress when it is not yet time to marry, it proves that their approaching nuptial will not be continued."

4. "If the insect 'gunting-gunting' makes a noise at nighttime by the door, it shows that somebody will be coming; but the noise comes near the altar, a near relative must have died."

5. "Avoid singing in front of the stove, because one will get married to a widow or widower."

6. "If a person in the home is on the family way, it is not wise to stay long at the ladder as it will entail a hard delivery."

7. "Don't sweep the floor in the evening as wealth might get away."

8. "When planting bananas, don't look upwards because the banana plants will grow tall."

9. "If a spoon falls down, there will be a female visitor; but if it is a fork, it is male."

10. "Smelling candles shows someone is dead which you don't know."

11. "Don't transfer to your house when it is under construction, as this will be bad luck to the members of the family."

12. If there are many stars at night, planting camotes and beans will mean a bountiful harvest.

13. "When you are going on a trip and a place [plate?] accidentally breaks, never attempt to continue your journey."

15. "It is bad for the bride or groom to be traveling, as each is highly susceptible to misfortune or accident.

How to dispell such beliefs:

1. By proving the fallacy of such superstitions through explanation and experimentation, if possible.

2. By educating the youth and adults through lectures and observation, especially during Elementary Science classes.

3. By proving through specific instances and illustrations and showing facts and figures that such superstitions are fallacious."

4. By inculcating upon the minds of the individuals that believing superstitions is a sign of ignorance and, hence, at variance with modern educational policies and principles.

e. Homes having safe drinking water: 598 homes.

Homes having toilets: 495 homes.

f. Undernourishment is prevalent.

Causes:
1. Lack of knowledge in selecting the right kind of food needed by the body.
2. Lack of enough supply of fresh fruits and vegetables in the local market.
3. Lack of financial means.

Remedial Measures:
1. Encourage the raising of more fruits and vegetables.
2. Encourage the raising of goats, cows, and carabaos, from which milk may be extracted.
3. Giving lectures and demonstrations regarding the selection of the right kinds of food needed by the body and how to prepare a balanced diet.

IX. HOME AND FAMILY:

a. Except for a few houses in the poblacion, generally, there is no overcrowding in the homes.

b. Which homes are tastesfully decorated? Which are not? How can they be improved?

The following houses are tastefully decorated:

All the rest of the houses in town need improvement in home decoration. Such can be attained should the financial conditions of the persons concerned [improve] and with further education on the beautification of the homes.

c. What cooking and kitchen facilities are common in the homes? How can they be improved?

The cooking and kitchen facilities that are common in the homes are:

1. Earthen pots
2. Iron pots
3. Iron frying pans
4. Sauce pans or stew pans (porcelain)
5. Kettles (porcelain)
6. Long-handled wooden paddle for the rice
7. Long-handled wooden with coconut shells as spoon for cooking

At present, we know, we are after native materials. They are also durable. These cooking and kitchen facilities mentioned above can only be improved if they will be cleaned after using them so that they will last longer. There should be a definite place for everything.

d. How can the problem of flies be solved? mosquitoes?

Get rid of their breeding places.

e. Which homes have been constructed for health and comfort?

1. Well-ventilated homes.
2. Homes with clean surroundings.
3. Proper location, not always drained with water.

f. Are home surroundings sanitary and properly drained?

Yes, some home surroundings are sanitary because deep ditches are built around them. There are homes with good drainage, too, because they are placed at a higher level.

Home and family continued:

But there are homes built in low places where drainage is too poor. Water remains stagnant. Mosquitoes are numerous that the persons who live there cannot sleep without using mosquito nets.

g. What food production activities does each home engage in?

a. Making gardens
b. Poultry raising
c. Hog raising

h. What are parents doing to teach religion to their children?

1. Children are taught the common prayers (morning, meal, night).
2. Children are taught to attend Masses or church services on Sundays or holidays.
3. Children are advised to attend Catechism in the school from Monday to Wednesday and on Sunday afternoon at the church.
4. Children are encouraged to read books and magazines about religion.
5. Children are encouraged to say their Angelus prayers and pay respect to their elders after the prayers.

i. Is the average home provided with the essential household furniture so as to meet the right comforts of life?

YES.

j. What household furniture would you consider essential to make the average home more livable and comfortable?

1. A set of chairs placed in the sala for visitors. These, too, can be used by the members of the family. These may be made of rattan or bamboo.
2. A dining table where the entire family can dine together.
3. Beds for their bedrooms. These may not be enough for all the members of the family.
